Fair Trade is a growing phenomenon. You don’t even have to look at the numbers to see that the impact is accelerating. Fair Trade isn’t just about coffee anymore.
As a retail business specializing in fairly traded goods, we are constantly looking for the new and different. Since we opened a year ago, the range and amount of Fair Trade items has grown enormously. The progressive system of trade that used to be centered on coffee has expanded to include everything from wine, to soccer balls, to furniture.
Sheer momentum in the Fair Trade movement makes it an exciting business in which to start out. As reported by the Fair Trade Federation in their 2005 study Fair Trade Trends in North America and the Pacific Rim, Gross sales of fairly traded goods in North America topped $472 million, up 48 percent from 2003 to 2004. While still a tiny portion of total trade in the North America, it will soon top a billion dollars a year!
This is why we saw an enormous opportunity to embrace a growing business while taking an active role in making the world a better place. The more diversity of goods that we can offer, the more power we all have with our purchasing dollars. You can literally make the world a better place simply by spending some of your dollars with us.
